Yes, the infection is not present in milk, and milk and milk products are safe to eat.

BSE is a disease in a group called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, abbreviated TSE. These are transmissible diseases that attack the nervous system of mammals, including man. Another name for these is prion diseases.

The infectious agent, prions, are found in certain nervous tissue in various places in the body. Essentially it is related to the brain, spinal cord, intestines and eyes. They are removed from the carcass during slaughter or butchering, and they are destroyed at designated facilities.

There is consensus in the scientific community that there is no risk of BSE contamination in milk or milk products.
