Plant protection products are mainly used to protect plants and plant products in agriculture, forestry and horticulture from attacks by fungii, pests and competing plants. A plant protection product may contain one or more active substances in addition to other ingredients such as co-formulants.

In Norway, plant protection products are regulated by the Norwegian regulation with the implemented European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 (LINK til lovdata). Before a plant protection product can be placed on the Norwegian market, it has to be approved by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), and specific national requirements may apply. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority will make an assessment of the possible environmental and health risks of the plant protection products, and assess whether the product is agronomically effective for the use applied for. To be approved a plant protection product must also comply with the criteria for health and environment specified in the uniform principles.
