    Foods for infants and young children containing probiotics

    The NFSA has made decisions prohibiting infant formulae and follow-on formulae and processed cereal-based foods and baby foods (weaning food) containing probiotics on the grounds that they did not fulfill the requirements to safety and suitability for the specific group they were intended for.

    The decisions have been based on risk assessments from the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM).

    The VKM has made the following assessments:

    • Risk assessment on use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus as an ingredient in infant formula and baby food (vkm.no) 
    • Risk assessment on use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG) as an ingredient in infant formula and baby foods (II) 
    • Assessments of benefits and risks of probiotics in processed cereal-based baby foods, Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 (vkm.no) 
    • Assessment of benefits and risks of probiotics in processed cereal-based baby foods, Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19 (vkm.no) 
    • Health risk assessment of a food supplement containing Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis (vkm.no) 
    • Assesments of 12 microorganisms in food supplements (vkm.no) 
    • Assessment of infant formula and follow-on formula supplemented with Lactobacillus fermentum CECT 5716 (vkm.no)
    • Assessment of three infant porridges and an infant formula containing probiotic bacteria Bifidobacterium lactis (vkm.no)
