Plant Breeders’ Rights

The Plant Variety Board considers the applications for Plant Breeders’ Rights in Norway. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority constitutes the secretariat of the Plant Variety Board.

A plant breeder's right is the exclusive right of the variety owner to sell and produce propagating material (seeds, seeds, mother plants, etc.). 

Plant breeders' rights are regulated through the Act on plant breeders' rights (the Plant Breeders' Act) and regulations on plant breeders' rights. Norwegian regulations are based on the provisions of the international convention for the protection of plant varieties:
