1 Formål
The aim is to study host specificity of the CH4 emission level and the ruminal microbial community following near-total exchange of ruminal contents in dairy cows and their concomitant immune status.

2 Skadevirkninger
The surgery represents a moderate distress for the cows. The exchange of ruminal content, the collection of blood and the stay in the metabolism barn represents a mild distress because of the restriction of the movement activity of the animals due to the tethering.

3 Forventet nytteverdi
Confirmation of the hypothesis that a rumen microbial community and methane production level reconstitutes after horizontal rumen transfaunation in low or high methane emitting cows (potentially through the host immune response) is indicative of the heritability of the microbiome and will be a ground-breaking discovery with far-reaching implications in both basic science and application in animal breeding.

4 Antall dyr og art
Four (+ one reserve) lactating dairy cows (Bos Taurus)

5 Hvordan etterleve 3R
The number of animals is reduced to the minimum, still ensuring a proper statistical evaluation.
The effect of the host (cow) on the microbial community in the rumen (including absorption and secretion and host immune response) is decisive in this experiment, therefore the proposed in vivo trial cannot be replaced with an in vitro trial.
